Contingent fee
Lisa A. Rickard, President of the US Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, applauded President Bush signing an Executive Order barring all contingency fee arrangements with outside plaintiffs' lawyers and expert witnesses who work on behalf of the United States Government.
What is wrong with the US Chamber of Commerce? The federal government doesn’t enter into contingent fee contracts but should if the circumstances call for it.
Do you really think the Tobacco Industry would have ever been challenged if state governments hadn't contracted with a group of plaintiff's lawyers on a contingent fee basis? Those trial lawyers spent tens of millions out of their own pockets and thousands of hours of work and would not have been paid a dollar if they hadn't won. No one in the government—state or federal—had the guts or the budget to hire lawyers by the hour to challenge the litigation war machine of tobacco.
Why doesn’t the US Chamber worry about the unaccounted billions of dollars paid to companies supposedly building stuff after Katrina or in Iraq. Maybe we should put Halliburton on a contingent fee and not pay them until we see a positive result!
